Nan and I had lunch at the cafeteria in the hospital (chicken wings, mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes.. not too bad!) and then returned to the waiting area. We were given progress updates about once an hour, and around 4:30, we were told the surgery was over and that Will was being moved to a temporary recovery room, where he would come out of the anesthesia and get cleaned up and taken care of a bit.
We met him in his overnight room around 6:30, when he was wheeled in by some nurses with a couple of hours left in their shift. He looked pretty banged up and had lots of swelling in his cheeks. For the next 4.5 hours, he came in and out of sleep. There were some rough spots along the way, but around 11:30, the nurse (who was from Kenya, Béla found out) had him flush his mouth out and gave him something to help with the nausea and something to help with the swelling. The drugs, along with a little bit of morphine, helped him right off to sleep. Additionally, it's only been a half hour and I am convinced I can tell a difference in the swelling.
Also I should mention that at no point today did he get any food to eat: not before the surgery or after. And he was a trooper the entire day, even with a sense of humor about the less comfortable parts of his post-op recovery. He gets MAJOR brownie points for being such a good boy.
I'm spending the night here tonight, at Dr. Albright's request. So it's just me now, with occasional visits from the nurses to take stats on Will. Generally, though, it is quiet. I like to watch Will's heart monitor as it draws out his pulse. I can see the places where his heart sometimes skips a beat, and I feel close to him. This helps me, because I won't be able to kiss his face for a day or two, at the very least, without him having pain.
We may be able to take him home as early as tomorrow afternoon, depending on what the doctors say and how Will feels. I'll try to follow up here with how it turns out.
